Our Friend, Oliver

The very nature of our name, Our Family Farm, invites every one of you to share in the goodness of what is happening as a result of the farm. It invites you into our family, in a way. And in the spirit of family we offer this unique post.

Our Family Farm shares a wonderful relationship with the Hvass family. Nels and Amanda Hvass have two little boys, the youngest named Oliver. Oliver was born with a unique combination of DNA that left him deaf, and with less than normal fine motor skill responses. It is often hard to tell Oliver has these disabilities because his cherubic cheeks always frame a huge smile.

The Hvass’ recently received some very exciting news. Oliver is a prime candidate to receive cochlear implants which means, if everything goes well, he will be able to hear!

If you are willing and able, please join Amanda and me at the Papa’s Pizza parlor on West 11th avenue, September 1st at 5:30PM to eat some pizza together to help the Hvass’ raise the money to pay for this expensive procedure. After all, these are the things families do for each other, right?

Turkeys 2010- A Field Odyssey

Your reception of the work we are doing at Our Family Farm is exciting, overwhelming and humbling. So many of you have found a way to support us in some fashion; purchasing pastured broilers, ordering grass-fed beef, relaxing at our farm field day, donating freezers and other materials, or offering professional services (thank you design guru, Jeff Maib for helping create business cards). This season has exceeded our expectations, and hopes. Thank you, everyone!

With this said, we were excited to offer Pastured Turkeys for the holidays, available mid November (specific date TBD). However, in our rookie season we overlooked one small detail- the order deadline for this relative specialty bird. We missed the boat. Since we discovered this information, we have been working like crazy over the past several weeks to uncover poults from hatcheries near and far. We were very sad to eventually come to accept that we would not have Turkeys this year…UNTIL…

Our good friends, Tyler and Alicia Jones from Afton Field Farm in Corvallis have graciously extended an invitation to provide pasture raised turkeys for you (we raise our birds in the same manner as Afton Field Farm; lots of fresh pasture, fresh air, and general goodness for the birds). This means if you have already preordered your turkey for the holidays, you will receive a delicious, juicy bird to share with family and friends. If you have not already preordered your bird, I highly recommend doing so quickly,  to guarantee receiving a bird this November. Email us at to get a bird, or several birds.
